And so the time has come...

...To say farewell to Nashville. You'll have to indulge me for a minute, because this is my sentimental post. Not like me, I know (and neither is posting pictures of myself). This is bitter sweet for me. It's only for 2 years and then we will most likely be back. However, with this move I feel like we are stepping into the real world a little more. We seriously have felt like students for the past 11 years since we had arrived in this city I have really grown to love. We leave behind a tiny 2 bedroom apartment for a spacious 4 bedroom house, our neighborhood close to everything for suburbia, and in a way our simpler life, while not necessarily to a more complicated one, more in the direction of established, something I don't really feel. We also leave behind a place where we have set down some deep roots and pulling them up kind of hurts. Our family has thrived and blossomed here with those deep roots to nourish it and I don't want that to whither away. This weekend the reality set in that we are leaving with several events planned, all for one purpose: to say "Good Bye". It's hard.
Here are some of the most amazing, awesome women I know (several others had stopped by, but already left before we got around to taking pictures). Friends from our ward (old and new) threw a little going away party out at Warner Park. The rain held off, the food was good and many had fun playing ultimate Frisbee as well as chatting.
These ladies and I go back a long time(that would be 10!!!! years for Anne Marie and Maura-Lee). The things I've learned from them, most of which they don't even know that they taught me, could fill a book. The love and support I've felt from them has carried me in ways they probably have never known, mostly because I probably haven't expressed it enough. They are amazing!
Now if only we didn't all have to go our separate ways in the years to come, these 5 girls-all born within a month of each other-could hang out together, craft together, have girl's night out, be in Relief Society together 20 years down the road.
We have had so many amazing people cross our paths, that we have looked up to and admire. Seeing that these people are so amazing, their kids are usually that way too. We, Phil and I, have a list in our heads of friend's children that we jokingly tell our kids that if we could, we would betroth them to right now. It's usually a reflection of how much we think of the parents and the awesome job they are doing raising their kids. Example in the picture above (it doesn't hurt that little Nicholas is so dang cute and blows Clara kisses whenever he sees her, which I was not able to get a picture of).

Good Times Were Had

Our good friends the Taylors had us to their cabin for the weekend and it was truely wonderful! This was really the first "vacation" we've taken in 1 1/2 years. The cabin is in Grundy County, TN in a lovely little town called Beersheba Springs. It sits on the rim of the Cumberland Plateau, which means there are a lot of water falls in the area. Our friends couldn't make it up until later in the afternoon so we went up early to take in the sites.
We did a little hiking.
Upper Greeter Falls

Lower Greeter Falls
The boys wanted to hike behind the falls, but only Jakob went all the way. Ethan didn't want to get his cast wet.
If you look closely you can see Sophia and I behind the falls.
Clara was laughing so hard at the sound rocks made when you threw them into the water.
The boys--Jakob, Hayes, Reed and Ethan
The Girls--Elise and Sophia
The Taylors thought they would honor us by burning down a building. Actually, there was a building on some property they own that was beyond repair and the fire department asked if they could practice (that is containment, not putting out the fire). This is about 2 minutes after lighting it.
This is about 2 minutes later.

This is around 40 minutes later...makes you want to live really close to a fire house doesn't it? Phil wants to send this to his fellow residents with the caption, "Guess what I did to celebrate being done with residency?"

Further up from Greeter Falls is a swimming hole. We went back the next day to cool off a little bit. The kids had a lot of fun. I was constantly worried that Ethan would fall on the slick rocks and either get his cast wet or hurt his arms again. He didn't.
Clara had fun in her own little swimming hole. If you said, "Clara, go swimming." she would lay down and start kicking her legs. She loves water and had a lot of fun in the deeper water too. Every time it came time to leave the water, where ever we were, she was not happy.

It's Official

Well we are down to about one week here in Nashville. It all seems very official now. Phil finished his last day as a resident...ever...yesterday. Today he received his orders...he's a lieutenant if you wanted to goad him a bit(although I don't think he outranks my brother in the Navy or brother-in-law in the Coast Guard). We have a house to live in(that's it above). A nice big house...with no furniture to put in to it. We do have an air mattress, however, and plenty of room...as in your own bedroom and bathroom...for people to visit. I heard Atlanta is a pretty interesting place. I'm planning on doing a lot of exploring while we are there.

How to Raise a Reader Part Two

Give them Calvin and Hobbes. What better reading could there be? There are challenging words, clever sayings and jokes that take a little thinking. It's pretty common to find Sophia, who in the last 4 months has really taken off on the reading road, curled up on the couch reading one of the many Calvin and Hobbes books. Both of the boys were this way, although having Jakob, who started reading before the age of 4, reciting/quoting Calvin and Hobbes was a little unsettling. My favorite Calvin and Hobbes moment happened a couple of years ago while we were carving pumpkins. Ethan was standing over the pumpkin and with a menacing face and knife in hand saying, "OK Jack, time for your lumberdummy." Phil and I just looked at each other and wondered what in the world he was talking about. He had to go and show us the comic, which really had Calvin saying, "OK Jack, time for your lobotomy." see here We were laughing so hard there were tears in our eyes.

How to Raise a Reader

I love finding my kids doing stuff like this. I don't care about the mess. I'll happily pick up books. I just want them to love books. A couple of days ago I looked over at Clara to see her like this. I took the picture right before there was a cascade of books. She had turned around the rocking chair and one by one taken a book off of the shelf, looked at it and put it on her lap. As you can guess, she was quite content for a long time.

Whose Eye Is It?

Here's a game that Ethan started playing on our camera by zooming in on the eyes. How well do you know us? (one of us is missing, but I'm not going to tell who just to make it a little harder)

What we did last Sunday

We went for a walk on such a beautiful and mild evening
The 2 girls still in their Sunday dresses
Walking behind the family--I feel blessed

Running through the field to beat the brothers home

And then a little soccer afterwards--thank goodness for bleach.
